Fr Brendan Byrne, SJ
Brendan Byrne, SJ, is professor of New Testament at Jesuit Theological College, Parkville (Victoria). A member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission (1990-96) and Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (2000-), he is the author of nine books and editor in chief of the theological journal Pacifica. Fr Byrne specializes in scripture and is perhaps best known as the author of 'Scripture and Vatican II: A very incomplete Journey'
Dr Katharine Massam
Dr Massam is currently Professor of Church History at the United Faculty of Theology, University of Melbourne and has also taught in universities in Western and South Australia. Dr Massam is the author of several publications including 'Sacred Threads: Catholic Spirituality in Australia 1922 – 1962'. This outstanding publication was nominated for the W.K. Hancock Prize in Australian History
Fr Frank O'Loughlin
Frank
Fr Frank O'Loughlin was ordained in Melbourne in 1969; he was a student in Rome at the time of the Council and obtained a doctorate in theology at the Urban University (Rome). In 1975 he studied liturgy at the Irish Institute of Pastoral Liturgy and has since lectured in sacramental theology and liturgy. He was director of the Diocesan Liturgical Centre in Melbourne and was involved in the formation of seminarians.
Fr Bruce Duncan
Fr Bruce Duncan was ordained in the Redemptorist order in 1971. He studied economics and politics at the University of Sydney, completing his doctorate in political science. Since 1986, he has taught at Yarra Theological Union (Melbourne) where he co-ordinates the program of social justice studies. He was a member of the Melbourne Catholic Commission for Justice, Development and Peace and has worked as a consultant with Catholic Social Services Victoria.
Cardinal George Pell
Cardinal George Pell grew up in Ballarat, Victoria and was ordained in 1966. In 1996 Cardinal Pell was appointment Archbishop of Melbourne and In 2001 he became the Archbishop of Sydney. He was elevated to the Sacred College of Cardinals in 2003. Cardinal Pell holds numerous qualifications in the fields of Theology, Education, Philosophy and Church History. Cardinal Pell was a student in Rome at the time of the Council and witnessed the Council first hand.
Fr Bob Maguire
Father Bob Maguire AM began parish work in the 1960's and came to St's Peter and Paul's (South Melbourne) as Parish Priest in 1973. A well known identity and a regular on 'Sunday Night Safran', (a popular radio show on youth network Triple J), Fr Maguire co-founded the Open Family charity in 1978. He has been an outspoken advocate of the poor and disadvantaged. For his work with street children, Fr Bob Maguire was awarded with the Order of Australia in 1989.
Anita Burke
Anita Burke is a Catholic layperson who grew up in Glen Iris, Victoria. Anita was raised during the pre-Vatican II era in a proud Catholic family. Anita's experiences during this period mirror those of many 'ordinary' Catholics during that time. Anita's brother, Kevin Burke was the inspiration behind 'Challenge, Change, Faith'.
Fr Peter Matheson
Fr Matheson studied at Urbaniana University and Propaganda Fide College (Rome) in the years immediately following the Council. He has completed post-graduate studies on Vatican II and was a lecturer at Mercy Teacher's College. He is currently Parish Priest at Our Lady of the Assumption Cheltenham, Victoria
Bishop Geoffrey Robinson
Bishop Geoffrey Robinson was born in Richmond NSW, ordained in 1960 and was consecrated Auxiliary Bishop in 1984. Bishop Robinson's education included several years studying at Urbaniana University, Rome (DCL) during the late 1950's and early 1960's. A respected author and scholar Bishop Robinson has dedicated himself to the fields of Canon Law, Scripture, Ecumenism and Catholic Education.
Eddie McGuire
Eddie" McGuire AM is a journalist, sports broadcaster, television host, businessman and the president of the Collingwood Football Club. Raised in a Catholic household, the son of a Scottish coal miner and Irish farm girl, Eddie attended St Dominic's church in the working-class outer suburb of Broadmeadows (Victoria). Eddie won a scholarship to Christian Brothers College, East St Kilda and owes much of his personal success to the Catholic education system.
Sr Margaret Moore
Sister Margaret Moore works with the Catholic Education Office (Melbourne) and holds tertiary qualifications in the fields of education, religious education, pastoral studies and spirituality. She has been the National Coordinator of Mercy Refugee Service for over a decade, which is part of the global relief and development work of the Sisters of Mercy. This work brought her close contact with refugees fleeing conflict in many different parts of the world.
Dr Kim Power
Dr Kim Power is a theological historian, specialising in patristic studies and feminist theology. Dr Power is the author numerous articles. A Junior Charles Strong Lecturer and a Senior Fulbright Scholar, Dr Power is also an adjunct scholar with the ACU Centre for Early Christian Studies. She has participated in the international collaboration on the development of Marian titles in later antiquity.
Fr Max Vadola
Fr. Max Vodola is a priest of the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne. He holds degrees in Theology, Master of Theological Studies and Master of Arts from Monash University. Fr Max lectures in the history of the Church in Australia. He is currently undertaking doctoral studies, the subject of his doctoral research is John XXIII's analysis of the works of St Charles Borromeo in relation to Vatican II and the politics of 'aggiornamento'.
Michael Costigan
Michael Costigan's career includes 14 years as a priest and 18 years as a journalist and senior public servant. He has held numerous journalistic and editorial positions and written and spoken widely about Church affairs. Attending and covering the Second Vatican Council for The Advocate newspaper stills ranks among the most challenging and rewarding assignments of his career. Having lived in Rome for nearly a decade, he was able to observe at close hand some of the preparations for the great event.
Sr Janet Mead
Janet
Born in Adelaide, Sister Janet joined the Sisters of Mercy and became a teacher. She began to explore the "rock mass" concept in the early 70's, wishing to make the Catholic church services more interactive and accessible for students at the schools where she taught. Sister Janet is still very active in her faith and also in community social services - assisting aged care, destitute men and women, refugees and the oppressed in Australian society and beyond.
Frank Di Blasi
Frank Di Blasi is a respected Italian Community Leader, who has devoted much of his adult life supporting the Italian community through the work of Coasit (Victoria). Frank immigrated to Australia from Italy in the early 1960's when he was 17 years old. As an Italian post war immigrant, Frank has a unique perspective on the Australian Catholic experience.
